From Anas b. Malik, from the Prophet, from Jibril, from Allah:'Whosoever offends one of My friends has declared war upon Me; and I grow as wrathful for My friends as an angry lion. My believing servant draws nigh unto Me with nothing so well as that which I have rendered obligatory for him; and My believing servant continues to draw nearer to Me with voluntary acts until I love him - and when I love him, I am for him his hearing, sight, hand, and aid. If he calls Me I will answer him, and if he asks Me I will give him. I hesistate in nothing of all that I do as I hesitate in claiming the spirit of My believing servant: he hates to die, and I hate to offend him; yet he has no option but to endure it.

There are those of My believing servants who ask Me for all manner of (acts of) worship, yet I withhold this from them lest it cause them to become self-satisfied, and so ruin them. There are those of My believing servants whose faith can only be sound through wealth, and were I to make them poor it would ruin them; and there are those of My believing servants whose faith canot be sound save through poverty, and were I to make them wealthy it would ruin them. There are those of My believing servants whose faith cannot be sound save through health, and were I to make them ill it would ruin them; and there are those of My believing servants whose faith cannot be sound save through illness, and were I to make them healthy it would ruin them. I arrange the affair of My servants by My knowledge of their hearts; and I am Knowing, Aware.'
