One wonders what the Friend thinks, for when the religious kill over interpretations of God, they reveal nothing but the depravity of religion and their alienation from God. One finds only contempt mingled with pity for such as these.

----------------------------------------

The answer lies in us if we surrender the question to the Friend. A wise person sits and ponders this.

----------------------------------------

Change your terminology and the "problem" likewise changes: you have not "battled" addictions your whole life but rather, have enjoyed addictions your whole life. Let your addictive trait be redeemed so that you become addicted to that which is right and pure. Addiction is not a weakness dear friend but, when addicted correctly, a driving force that empowers you and draws in others. Be an addict of the Friend! Become drunk on spiritual wine! Be a glutton of holy foods! Drown here and when you rise up for air, thrust your head under again! Let this take your life, day and night, let this take your life! Commit suicide till all vestige of a You is gone and only Allahu exists!

----------------------------------------

Hardened criminals may boast of their acts
but they were too weak to do what was right
and fool no-one but themselves

----------------------------------------

Give up being "right" and embrace righteousness.

----------------------------------------

Islam, surrender, submission – these things existed long before religion, long before Musa, Isa and Muhammad. Other prophets will arise, and still Islam will endure, for it is nothing less than joining with God.

----------------------------------------

To grasp the remotest concept of unconditional love cannot be started upon without equal progress in self–acceptance: the two are essentially different sides of the same coin.

----------------------------------------

I may not have the knowledge to assist a person in their business affairs; I may not contain the acumen to direct the investments of those of tremendous wealth; nor may I have the political nuance to advise rulers and officials in their day–to–day routines but what I do have is peace. True peace cannot be traded as a commodity; cannot be bought or sold regardless of an individual's wealth; cannot be enforced through political governance. True peace starts in the consciousness, is the salvation of humanity, and the basis for correct action in all the afore–mentioned affairs.

----------------------------------------

Where the orthodox gather
there is seriousness and long speeches;
where the sufis gather
there is only celebration and dhikr

----------------------------------------

If they ask you "what is your Silsila?"
tell them the universe of your mind to the lunacy of Al–Hallaj to the effacement of Sheikh Isa
if they scoff and say "that is no chain of transmission!"
then say Allah alone. Saints come and saints go
only Allah is new every morning

----------------------------------------

If you don't know what to say, don't say anything. You are under no obligation
to have the answers to everything

----------------------------------------

There should be balance between work and home, public and private, the outward and the inward.

----------------------------------------

It is true: there will come a time when all that consumes you is irrelevant. Till then, your entire life will be spent on irrelevant things.

----------------------------------------

How many times I have been disgusted by our patronising tones against the less fortunate! How many times I have been outraged by lazy, sefish people demanding more from those who work!

----------------------------------------

When a boy needs his parents to correct him -
when a student needs his teachers to correct him -
when a youth needs the police to correct him -
when an adult needs prison guards to correct him –
you have an eternal child who refuses to become a man who takes responsibility for himself a shame to himself and a waster of his own mortality, a fool till the end quickly forgotten once death reclaims him. Few mourn his passing

---------------------------------------- -

Many a Jacob seeks their Joseph here
and Rumi's abound, but there are few if any Shams
another Ali may be sought but never will be discovered
and history closes its cover on the very learning so few hunger for;
where is the imam of our age?

----------------------------------------

I do as my parents have done
to uphold their honour as they did the honour
of their parents before them. This is filial duty
for our ancestors are the chain of transmission
and you and I its brightest links

----------------------------------------

Meditation is not escape from the world, far from it: meditation embeds us in the world, we few who are awake to it.

----------------------------------------

Learned scholars instruct you on what to eat, what to wear, what sexual acts are permissible and even how to pray. When you become a man you will choose your own way with or without the advice of others. When you become a dervish you will judge yourself alone. When you become spirit all judgement will cease.

----------------------------------------

Honor the mother of your children; cover her with your body. A dignified wife is a source of integrity and no amount of young virgins compares with her. Whoever pays scant regard to a woman like this deserves to lose her, and whoever weds her holds his head up amongst his companions.

----------------------------------------

I am tired of the outward form
I have utterly finished with seeking
I retire now to the inward that all that is outward
reflect the vastness of lost-self here in the Ocean of God's divine being

----------------------------------------

One can discuss tasawwuf to distraction but unless the practice is practiced a distraction is all it will ever be.

----------------------------------------

A climber of mountains set his sights upon the highest of them all; through cliff face and precipice, ice fissure and snow, he worked his way to the mountain top cold, frost-bitten and alone. When he died short of his goal he was found a year later frozen solid, eyes locked on the apex still. May our deaths be like that man, eyes locked on the Friend.

----------------------------------------

When you enter the khanaqa my brother, may all your expectations and illusions submerge, that the quickening be enabled within you.

----------------------------------------

The early Muslims turned against one another; the Sunni majority cast out the Shiite minority; the Shiite majority cast out the Baha’i minority and so it goes on – even some sufis have been guilty of these things. Have you not heard the proverb that the blacker the night the brighter the stars? If you were secure in GOD you would cast out nothing for even daisies grow amongst the wreckage, weeds in the cracks of cement, and children play amongst the burnt-out hulks of battle tanks.

----------------------------------------

What you know of GOD is ultimately through the lense of yourself, your expectations, your beliefs, your theology. Thus ten men who believe the same thing share much in common even as each of the ten believes differently from the other. The Friend is unfettered by such a concept but the orthodox rage against it night and day, night and day.

----------------------------------------

Let us be found wherever truth is found. Wherever truth is found let us go there. When we are old others will come to us, and when we have crossed-over we will learn anew again.

----------------------------------------

Master! I am one life of three: there will not be a fourth. In no shape or form will we return here and by the grace of God, we are all delivered back into wholeness within the Whole.

----------------------------------------

How people lament war, at least until they win.

Description:

This deeply personal reminiscence of one man's growth in Islamic mysticism is a tribute to the two great shaykhs who molded his spiritual life and vision. Filled with anecdotes illustrating the shaykhs' spiritual gifts and insights, the text not only conveys the beauty and inspiration of these men's lives and their utter devotion to God, but also helps readers to approach a life of devotion and inimitable blessings. Sufi interpretations of Qur'an passages and traditional Sufi spiritual litanies are included. An appendix features an account of female gnostic Hajja Zakia's life and devotion to Shaykh Abul Hasan and is augmented by a photographic essay.
