’Shall I take to myself as protector other than God, the Originator of the heavens and of the earth, He. who feeds and is not fed?’ Say: ’I have been commanded to be the first of them that surrender: "Be not thou of the idolaters."’
(Quran, VI. 14)
He Is from eternity to eternity, and to him nothing may be added.
Nor can he be diminished, and he hath no need of any counsellor.
(Ecclesiasticus, XLII. 21-22)
The atoms of the world may be counted, but not so my manifestations: for eternally I create innumerable worlds.
(Srimad Bhagavatam, XI. X)
My bounty is as boundless as the sea,
My love as deep; the more I give to thee,
the more I have, for both are infinite.
(Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet)
The participations neither augment nor diminish him, for they are communicated by him, not detached from him.

(Chuang-tse; ch.II)

Description:

This introduction to Islam for Western readers explores the fundamental religious beliefs held by Muslims for nearly 1400 years. It covers the four dimensions of Islam - practice, faith, spirituality and the Islamic view of history, as outlined in the Hadith of Gabriel. Interweaving teachings from the Koran, the sayings of the Prophet, and the great authorities of the tradition, the book introduces the essentials of each dimension. It then goes on to describe how each has been manifest in Islamic institutions throughout the course of history.
