Description of Coquilla Nut (kuk, kokka, kaukah, cuk, كوك) and Camel Bone Tasbih
This 100 prayer bead set wonderfully combines the two materials of kuk and camel bone. In partnership with an Islamic prayer bead guild, based in Old Cairo around the sanctuary of the Sayidna Husayn mosque, we have been able to create this special tasbih rosary. The tassels were woven by students of Al-Azhar University who, through learnt their trade from their forefathers.
The coquilla nut comes from a magnificent palm that takes approximately a hundred years to grow to maturity. The tree emanates from swampy lands and, along with leaves that can grow up to 12 meters long, it produces a nut which has become a popular material used in prayer beads for its durability as well as its multiple benefits.
Within Islamic folkloric tradition, it has been passed down that the Safina (Ark) of Prophet Nuh (AS) was constructed of the coquilla palm although some scholars, such as Abd Allah ibn Abbas (RAA), claimed it was made of teak wood. Whatever it may be, many spiritual masters and Islamic traditional medicine practitioners have expounded on the health and spiritual advantages of kuk nut. One of its characteristics is that the beads of a coquilla nut tasbih retains the energy of the dhikr (remembrance of God) and acts as an amulet for protection.
