Description of 10 x 6 mm Scented Agarwood (Oud, Ud, عود) Tasbih
Agarwood (Oud) is timeless; its sweet-balsamic scent has been described in the world's oldest written texts, from India, dating back to 1400 BC.
Islamic literature itself is replete with references to agarwood. Umar ibn al-Khattab, Islam's second caliph, instructed the burning of incense in mosques. Although no records exist of the scent burnt, it is believed that agar was used.
Agarwood is produced when the heartwood of the aquilaria tree is infected causing a resin to arise. From this beautifully scented, soft resin, that covers parts of the mother-tree, Islamic civilization created the craft of tasbih making with the use of oud. The beads are soft to the touch, resilient, and carry strong traces of the beautiful fragrance especially when rubbed together.
To keep the craft of oud tasbih making alive, Rumi's Garden has partnered with a 5th generation family workshop based in the heart of old Cairo beside the blessed tomb of Sayidna Hussain, the grandson of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The tassels of this prayer bead was outsourced to young struggling students from al-Azhar university who have brought to Egypt the well-kept secrets of West African tasseling.
