Description of 10 x 5 mm Coquilla Nut Tasbih with Ebony Inlay
Coquilla nut, often called Kuk or Kaukah in the Islamic world, is derived from the fruit of the attalea palm which can take up to 100 years to grow to maturity. In many aspects, the coquilla nut resembles a small coconut. It is extremely hard and requires the workmanship of a talented carver to create a beautiful tasbih out of it. Coquilla nut
is often called vegetable ivory due to its similarity in texture and look to elephant ivory.
Within Islamic oral tradition, it has been transmitted that the Ark of Sayidna Nuh (AS) was made from the Kuk tree. Within Unani medicine (Perso Arabic traditional medicine), the coquilla nut is used to treat many ailments including the boosting of weak immune systems. Furthermore, within the Islamic occult sciences, Kuk is believed to ward off jinn and act as a protection.
In combination with ebony, which itself is a dark, strong, black hardwood, this tasbih is symbolic of groundedness, protection and steadfastness in the journey of the believer towards God.
It is with great honor and pleasure that Rumi's Garden has partnered with a fifth generation family-run tasbih guild in Egypt to produce this wonderful prayer bead made completely from natural materials. Since all our tasbihs are handmade, do expect variations and minor inconsistencies within the tasbih.
