The attalea funifera palm bears fruit to the coquilla nut which has been described by many spiritual traditions as having spiritual and healing properties. Islam is no exception; timeless oral traditions have described the Ark of Prophet Nuh and the staff of Prophet Moses as being made from the Kuk tree.
The coquilla nut itself is 7-10 cm in length and has a very hard, richly streaked brown shell that is capable of being finely polished. This for tasbih makers have made it a treasure along with the long held belief that Kuk retains the spiritual energy of dhikr.
Rumi's Garden has partnered with a family run masbaha guild that operates in close proximity to the The Sayyidna Hussein Mosque in Cairo to produce these finely crafted beads. The guild commissions West African students to make the tasseling of the tasbihs which has now become a dying art-form.
