The blessed olive tree, a symbol of resilience, peace and rejuvenation, flourishes in the dry, rocky Mediterranean areas where winters are short & mild and summers are hot and long. Even under difficult conditions, such as extreme heat and drought, the plant still prospers. The olive tree is often referred to as the tree of life and it holds a sacred place within the three Abrahamic faiths. In one hadith, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ reported that we should eat olive oil and apply it to our bodies because it contains the cure to seventy diseases including leprosy.
Ebony, a dense, dark hardwood that belongs to the family of trees called diospyros, also has a rich history that predates the Ancient Egyptians. Pharaoh Amenhotep III would distribute ebony furniture to the kings of Arzawa & Babylonia, while the kings of India would use it to make cups due to its antidotal properties against poison. Because of its beautiful fine-texture, that when polished has a mirror finish, Muslims have long used ebony in the making of masbahas. Its color and qualities have come to represent stability, harmony, and ‘The Essence'.
Through a fifth generation family workshop that specializes in Islamic rosaries, Rumi's Garden has commissioned this ebony & olive tasbih. The tassels were designated to a young group of Western African men who have learnt the craft of tasseling from their parents and grandparents.
