Therein are maidens of modest gaze, whom neither man nor jinn has ever touched. So which of your Lord’s boons do you two deny? Even as the ruby and as the coral stone are they. So which of your Lord’s boons do you two deny?
(Quran, 55: 56-59)
Ethically sourced Red Sea black coral, belonging to the family Antipathes, is extremely rare and breathtaking. For hundreds of years, the kings and queens of Asia Minor prized it for its beauty and healing properties. It is often referred to as a stone of regeneration and purification. Amulets of black coral were often worn by the Romans to deflect the evil eye and in Indian Subcontinent, it was often called 'The King’s Coral since it was used as a royal staff by kings, sultans and amirs. Furthermore, modern medicine has found coral to be beneficial for spinal canal and nervous system disorders.
Within the Quran, in Surah al-Rahman, ruby and coral represent beauty and purity of the maidens of paradise. Coral is also a symbol for the moon, the giving of life and the fertility of the waters.
