Description of Scented Agarwood (aloeswood, Ud, عود) Tasbih

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle said, "The first group of people who will enter Paradise, will be glittering like the full moon and those who will follow them, will glitter like the most brilliant star in the sky. They will not urinate, relieve nature, spit, or have any nasal secretions. Their combs will be of gold, and their sweat will smell like musk. The aloes-wood will be used in their centers..."

(Sahih Muslim; 55:544)

Agarwood, aloeswood, oud, Inglewood, gaharu; these are a few names for the wonderfully resinous and fragrant heartwood produced by some trees from the genus Aquilaria. The variety of names this wood has been given reflects how widespread its use has been for millennia, and indeed, it remains highly valuable.

Historically, agarwood has been recorded in the Old testament as a perfume and in the Susruta Samhita, an ancient Sanskrit text, as an Ayurvedic medicine. Till today, traditional Tibetan and East Asian medical healers still use it as a remedy for various ailments. Agarwood incense is used in the religious ceremonies of Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims, and in Japan the Koh-doh (The Art of Incense) is performed in ceremonial style.

Within Islam, as noted by the hadith quote, oud is a paradisaical tree. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also expounded on the various healing properties of agarwood which he referred to as Oud Hindi.

Within the world of tasbih making, agarwood has been a consistently staple material, used by craftsmen, because of its beautiful earthy color, soft texture and wonderful smell.

It is with immense pleasure that Rumi's Garden presents to you an agarwood tasbih that was created in conjunction with a fifth generation masbaha workshop based in Islamic Cairo neighbouring the tomb of Sayidna Husayn. The tassels were assembled by West African Tijani students of al-Azhar University.
