Description of 8 mm Agarwood (Oud, Ud, عود) Tasbih
Agarwood, called Oud in Arabic, comes from the resin of the blessed Aquillaria agallocha tree. It has an earthy cinnamon-sweet aroma that is produced by over 150 chemical compounds.
Related by Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described Paradise where, among many heavenly things, agarwood would be used in burner censers. The caliph Harun al-Rashid, upon his death in 809 AD, left an impressive inventory of his personal belongings that included 1000 baskets of agarwood and other perfumes.
Agarwood has traditionally been a staple material used in making tasbihs. This is understandable considering its beautiful grounding color, its softness to touch and its fragrant scent.
To produce this oud prayer bead, Rumi's Garden has had the honour of working alongside a fifth generation tasbih workshop located in the midst of Cairo's old market that surrounds the Mosque of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ grandson, Sayidna Hussain. The tasseling of this sibha was commissioned to a group of West African students who study at al-Azhar University.
Each agarwood sibha is handmade using high grade quality natural materials so some minor variations in bead size, color, markings and shape is expected and reflects the individual and organic beauty of each sibha set.
