Description of Ebony (أبنوس) Tasbih
Ebony is a wonderful black hardwood that belongs to the genus Diospyros and is part of the Evergreen family. Native to Sri Lanka, India, Africa, and Indonesia, this magnificent tree type can take up to two-hundred years to fully grow. The grain of ebony is fine and tight; when polished, the final finish gives a mirror effect. Sometimes, a banded pattern, like tiger’s lines, are present on Ebony wood depending on the tree used to make the particular tasbih. Ebony is so dense, that when a tasbih bead is put in water, it will sink. Medicinally, the roots of Ebony were traditionally used to treat dysentery, intestinal parasites, leprosy and fever.
In terms of its symbolism, Ebony represents purity, protection and majesty due to its color and density. The color symbolism of black, in Islam, also stems from the Prophetic banner which is said to have been made from the black headscarf of Sayida Aisha bint Abu Bakr (RAA). According to Imam Tabari, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore a black cloak during his last days.
It is with enormous delight that Rumi’s Garden brings to you this ebony tasbih which was created by an Islamic tasbih guild based in Cairo. The guild has been running for five generations and continues to mentor future prayer bead craftsmen. Each prayer bead set is uniquely handmade with the finest materials and the tassels were created by Azhari students who mastered their craft under the apprenticeship of their forefathers.
