Description ofthe "Our Lord, lay not upon us a burden" Panel
The following calligraphic lawha is a reproduction of a splendid Perso-Arabicnastaliqcalligraphy piece scripted in the 20th-century. It consists of a segment of the final verse fromSurah al-Baqara(Chapter of The Cow: V.286), and it is a dua (personal prayer) commonly recited by Muslims. The Quranic dua reads:
Our Lord, lay not upon us a burden like Thou laid upon those before us.
According to a hadith, it is reported that during his Night Journey and Ascension (al-Israa and al-Miraj), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was given three things: the five canonical prayers, the final two verses of “The Cow,” and forgiveness of sins for any member of his community who does not ascribe partners to God. The portion of the verse depicted in the panel is a supplication to God to alleviate our burdens and it implicitly reasserts our covenant to give ourselves fully to Him ﷻ.
In terms of the layout of thecomposition, the masterful calligraphy is set in a cloud upon a background of white flowers. The borders also contain wonderful floral designs in gold.
