Description of Replicated Ottoman Calligraphic Panel with Prophetic and Angelic Names
This magnificent calligraphic panel is a reproduction of an Ottoman art piece inked by one of the greatest 19th-century/ early 20th century calligraphers, Haj Ahmed Kamil Akdik.
Bordered by a floral design set on a blue background, the topmost calligraphy reads 'In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' in black muhaqqaq script.
Central, in the circular text-block, is written the Divine Name 'Allah Jalla Jalaluhu' ('May his glory be glorified') that rests above Muhammad ﷺ (peace be upon him).
This centerpiece is surrounded by the names of various Prophets set to the different nations: Adam, Idrees, Nuh, Hud, Salih, Ibrahim, Lut, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqoub, Yusuf, Ayoub, Shuaib, Musa, Harun, Ilyas, Daud, Sulaiman, Luqman, Yunus, Dhu al-Kafl, Uzayr, Dhu' al-Qarnayn, Zakariya, Yahya, and 'Isa.
On the four corners of the central square are the names of the four archangels:
Jibrail: the deliverer of revelation to the prophets and the magnificent warrior who led an army of angels into the Battle of Badr and who defeated Iblis, when he tempted Prophet 'Isa (AS).
Mikail: the archangel of mercy. Some scholars have pointed out that Mikail is in charge of angels who carry the laws of nature.
Israfil: the archangel who blows into the trumpet in the end time and therefore is responsible for signaling the coming of Qiyamah (Judgment Day).
Azrael: the archangel of death. He and his subordinative angels are responsible for parting the soul from the body of the dead and will carry the believers to heaven and the unbelievers to hell.
The lower one-third of the calligraphic panel consists of the 2 statements that send benedictions on all the prophets. A partial translation of the smaller script is:
O Allah, send your benedictions on our master Muhammad and Adam and Nuh and Ibrahim and Musa and 'Isa and all the prophets and messengers who came between them. May God's blessings and peace be upon them all.
