And thereby We brought into being for you gardens of date palms and grapevines, wherein you have many fruits and whereof you eat, and a(n) [olive] tree issuing forth from Mount Sinai that produces oil and a seasoning for eating.
(Quran, 23: 19-20)
The blessed olive tree, also called ‘the oldest cultivated tree’, grows up to 12 meters high and it can take forty years for it to start bearing fruit. Once it does produce olives, it can continue to do so for centuries. Older trees can reach up to 2000 years in age. From this sacred plant nothing is wasted; its fruit quenches hunger, or is used to produce olive oil, the leaves possess medicinal value and the wood of the tree is highly valued for carpentry work.
Olive wood has a fine, wavy grain that is pale yellow in color with brown strokes. It is extremely smooth to the touch, and it releases an olive oil odor, when rubbed which is why it is such an ideal material to use in tasbih making. The olive tree is a powerful symbol in many religions. It represents wisdom, fertility, purity and the Intellect which comes to know God.
It is a privilege for Rumi's Garden to present to you a 10mm olive wood tasbih which was created by a family-run sibha guild based in Cairo, close to the Mosque of Sayidna al-Hussain. The brown and cream tasseling work was accomplished by Western African students of knowledge who now reside there while they study.
