Description of 6 x 5 mm Lightly Scented Olive Wood Tasbih
"By the fig and the olive, by Mount Sinai, and by this land made safe, truly We created man in the most beautiful stature"
(Quran, 95: 1-5)
The sacred olive tree is an evergreen belonging to the family Oleaceae that is native to the coastal areas of Africa, Asia and the Mediteranian. Symbolically, the olive branch represents deep devotion and it was so dear to cultures past, including the Ancient Egyptians, who often buried their dead with vessels full of olive oil.
Within the Islamic tradition, olive is referred to as the fruit of the earth by which God swears on due to the blessings and benefits it contains. Al-Tabari says, in his Quran commentary that the olive tree is symbolic of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
Olive wood has long been a foundational material used in making tasbihs because it promotes peace and joy. The wood is extremely soft to the fingers and each bead releases the fragrance of olive oil when used.
In cooperation with a sibha guild based in the heart of the Sayidna Husain area in Cairo, Rumi’s Garden is humbled to bring to you the olive wood tasbih. The cream and brown tasseling was commissioned to West African Azhari students who have graced us with their inter-generational craft.
