Description of cross-stitched cushion from Palestine
Rumi's Garden brings you this intricately embroidered Palestinian cushion cover. The endangered traditional craft of Palestinian embroidery (tatreez) is the art of creating decorative and symbolic designs on fabric using needle and thread. For hundreds of years, tatreez has symbolized political resistance and is one of few sources of income for women who have become widows, divorced, impoverished, or refugees.
Traditionally, women used to meet and embroider together, and during these gatherings, stories of past and present were not only told but were incorporated into their embroideries. The art of cross-stitched embroidery was passed down to the craftswomen from their mothers and grandmothers and each Palestinian region and time period has its own flavor of embroidery style. Design patterns are generally derived from sources as diverse as ancient mythology dating back to the Canaanites, to images representing land, nature, family, marriage, motherhood, and social status.
Rumi's Garden is honored to work with a cooperative association that aims to assist women in the Hebron district with resources to maintain an income for themselves and their families through the production of traditional Palestinian crafts and arts. All profits are distributed amongst the craftswomen as an additional income to support their families. Since each piece is handmade, there will be inconsistencies within the various components of the textile making it completely unique and a one-of-a-kind piece.
