Description of Large Gujarati Hand-loomed Wool Shawl
'The artist is not a special kind of person; rather each person is a special kind of artist'
This stunning unisex shawl measures 220 cm x 98 cm in size and was created from hand-spun wool that has been naturally dyed by using a combination of plant pigments such as madder, lac, tesu, harada, indigo, pomegranate, walnut and henna. In order for the ethically sourced natural wool to absorb the dye, it is soaked in a mordant such as sodium alum, which is a technique that has been used for millennia since the times of the Romans. Natural plant dyes are then mixed into the bath and boiled in order to produce the stunningly beautiful colors of this shawl.
In terms of weaving technique, one weft yarn is used to create a ground cloth and an additional weft is inserted, at various intervals, in order for a decorative pattern on the surface of the cloth to emerge.
The shawl is a one of a kind unique piece that is hand-loomed.There may be small variations in size and inconsistencies in weaving and dyeing, which add to the character of the shawl.
Rumi's Garden is honored to have worked with the weavers belonging to a guild in East India who have produced this shawl. The guild's objective is to provide a consistent income to weavers from small villages around Gujarat and to educate them on the use of natural dyes.
Maintaining Your Shawl
To maintain the shawl, hand-wash it with a small amount of mild wool/ silk soap or delicate non-biological wool detergent. Do not dry cleaning. Do not tumble dry. The wool softens after a wash and continues to do so with time.
