Large Framed Double Kiswah (Ghilaf) Set: Holy Ka'aba in Mecca & Sacred Chamber (Hujrah) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Medina

Rumi’s Garden humbly presents a double framed kiswah set consisting of a 15 x 15 cm Holy Ka’aba kiswah from Mecca and a 15 x 15 cm Kiswah al-Saadat from Medina.

The cross-section of the black Holy Ka’aba kiswah (كسوة الكعبة) comes from a larger panel that covered the House of God and was then removed on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1433 hijri, during an annual ceremony that takes place during Hajj.

The Kiswah al-Saadat (Curtain of Bliss) comes from the Sacred Chamber of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Hujrah al-Nabawia al-Sharifa; الحجرة النبوية الشريفة) in Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (Al Madinah Al Munawwarah). The panels of the contemporary kiswah are green and white in color and the full curtain surrounds the burial tombs of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Abu Bakr as-Saddiq (RAA), and Umar ibn al-Khattab (RAA). The fragment of the Kiswah al-Saadat comes from a larger panel that was used inside the Sacred Chamber.

Two events, which are two aspects of the same reality, had cast the cities of Mecca and Medina into the most important pages of world history. These events were the birth in 570 AD, maturity and prophethood of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ - and the descent of the Holy Quran upon him during a 23-year period from 610 AD until his death in 632 AD. These events of cosmic proportions established Islam, the last plenary religion of humanity, upon the earth, thereby transforming not only the history of Arabia or of the Mediterranean basin and the Persian and Byzantine Empires, but also of lands as far away as France and the Philippines and, ultimately, the whole of the globe. The revelation of the Noble Qur’an, the verbatim Word of God for Muslims, began in Mecca where the Blessed Prophet was born, and continued in Medina where he died. The very landscape of these two cities still reverberates with the grace (barakah) of the revelation and echoes the presence of that most perfect human being who was chosen by God to receive His last message and thereby to bring to completion the cycle of prophecy which had begun with Adam himself.

To be a caretaker of the kiswah, which has always been considered to be one of the most important of Islamic relics, is to actively partake in and preserve this beautiful history of Islam. More importantly, the kiswah fragments are a reminder for the caretaker to live Islam, not only in its outward form, but in its principles and values, in its light, compassion, and goodness, and in alignment with the heart which is the inner qibla.
