Reproduced to the highest quality, this Perso-Arabic nastaliq calligraphy piece was originally composed in the 20th-century. It consists of verse 201 from Surah al-Baqara (Chapter of The Cow) which is reported to be one of the most repeated supplications (dua) by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Quranic dua reads:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and shield us from the punishment of the Fire!
The Arabic word for 'good' in this verse is hasanah, which is derived from the root h -s-n which includes, by definition, “that which is beautiful.”
In terms of the layout of the lawha, it begins with the full formula of basmala (In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful) that rests under a blue arch with golden a floral design. This is followed by the large script which consists of the beginning of the dua: 'Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter'. In the center of the piece is the full Quranic verse scribed in smaller print. The whole composition is made of vibrant colors and beautiful floral and arabesque designs.
